Leave God Out…at your own peril
As I look back over the past 12 months, several things stand out. But I think the most dramatic is how confidence in our political and scientific leaders has all but evaporated. It’s like the old joke about how you know when a lawyer (politician, scientist, etc.) is lying…his lips are moving. Not so funny anymore.
The landscape is littered with lies,
half-truths, innuendo, all supported and promoted by the media whose job was supposed to be to hold those in authority accountable. Hatred has replaced objectivity as the measuring stick by which decisions are made. Hidden agendas, possibly driven by greed and kept from wondering (not wandering) eyes, have spawned conspiracy theories galore.
Freedoms, heretofore taken for granted, have been slashed by power-hungry (little “g”) gods looking for their 15 minutes of fame while destroying lives, businesses, and our robust economy in general. All means of social interaction—schools, churches, restaurants, etc.—have been virtually eliminated in the name of flattening the curve. “Science” was thought to have all the answers. Only problem, they kept changing the answers.
But that was 2020.
This is 2021. Whether you believe in the God of the Bible or not, He WILL have His way. The Bible warns us, “Why are the nations in an uproar and the peoples devising a vain thing? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His anointed, saying, ‘Let us tear their fetters apart and cast away their cords from us!’ He who sits in the heavens laughs, the Lord scoffs at them. Then He will speak to them in His anger and terrify them in His fury.” (Psalm 2:1-5).
Not believing in God is like not believing in the law of gravity. It doesn’t matter what you believe, that law cannot be broken. And just because you don’t believe in or want accountability to, the One that you will stand before in judgment someday, doesn’t change the reality. The Bible also says, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them…so that they are without excuse.” (Rom. 1:18-20)
Without excuse means just that.
No amount of blaming others or circumstances will carry any weight in God’s courtroom. But, and here’s the unbelievably good news, there is ONE WAY to “beat the rap.” In spite of all the “ungodliness and unrighteousness” hurled at God in ignorance and arrogance, He still loves us with unconditional love, love not based on what we do or don’t do but love based on God’s character alone. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son [Jesus Christ], that whoever believes in Him will not perish but will have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
What does it mean to “believe in Jesus?”
God is holy and cannot tolerate sin. We sin. As a result, the relationship God wants to have with us has been broken. Jesus came to earth specifically to pay the debt our sin created and which we could never pay with good deeds or any amount of money. So what’s the catch? No catch, we just have to do it God’s way. And that’s where many will miss the train. Our pride cannot admit we’ve been wrong about God and allow us to turn from our wicked ways and trust Jesus’ “paid in full” pardon. That’s the gist of today’s title. It’s a life and death decision…literally.
I would like to think you’ve read this far because God is calling you to Himself, not to a religion, not to a set of laws and regulations, but to the magnificent grace and mercy He offers everyone. He wants a relationship with you and has created an eternal home in heaven where NONE of the sin which has led to 2020 will exist…ever.
