Looking for Work

A few good men.

It seems everybody is looking for a few good men. The Marine Corps, any employer who has openings, any group of would-be brides, the God of heaven. I’m sure, if you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you’ve asked yourself, “What is God’s will for me?” Today, I’m going to answer that question.

We’re all probably familiar with 2 Cor. 5:17, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature…” But I wonder how many of us know the next verse: “Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation…” And there it is, God’s will. Are you looking for a place to plug in at your church? How about starting or joining the Ministry of Reconciliation? What is that and why do we need it? A simple definition of reconciliation is this: reuniting, bringing back together again. For our purposes, it means showing others the way (back) to God.

How does that apply to me?

I have no seminary or Bible school training. Do you know Jesus? Do you have a Bible? You’re qualified. In its simplest form, it means sharing the good news that Jesus came to earth to reconcile sinners to His Father. Your role is just to tell people the story. God doesn’t keep score of how many you talk to that turn from a life of sin. The results are the Holy Spirit’s job.

As to why we need it, it’s because sin has separated us from a holy God. We sin. Therefore we’re under judgment. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Three chapters later we learn the penalty for sin, “For the wages of sin is death,” but thank God it doesn’t stop there, “but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 6:23).

Have you ever tried to sell something?

You know how many objections, real or not, people can come up with. Too expensive, bad timing, I don’t need it. And hundreds more. In a way we’re sharing the gospel, hoping they will bite. But price can’t be an objection because it’s totally free…to us, but it cost Jesus His life to offer mankind reconciliation.

I’m not a fisherman, but I know if I wanted to catch fish, I’d have to go where they are. Sharing the good news is like that. Fortunately, you don’t need a large pond with thousands of fish. You only need one person who needs a Savior. And they’re all around us; in our churches, in our families, in our neighborhood, at our jobs, we just have to “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.” (2 Tim. 4:2).

If you’ve never shared your faith

because you don’t feel like you know enough, you’ve bought into the enemy’s lie. You have your own story to tell about who you were before you met Jesus, how He changed you, and who you are now (a new creature). There are many good ways to start a conversation about God. My two favorites are The Way of The Master and Evangelism Explosion. Both start with simple questions (one example from each). “Have you ever considered what happens after you die?” “If you were to die and stand before God and He asked you, ‘Why should I let you into heaven?’ what would you say?”

I firmly believe that all Christians, myself included, are educated way beyond our obedience. I don’t mean college degrees or that kind of education. I mean, if we’ve read any of the Bible, we’ve come across one or more commands that we’re not obeying. I don’t say that to condemn anyone but to encourage us to test our faith and see how faithful God is to “strongly support those whose heart is completely His.” (2 Chron. 16:9). As I said earlier, God doesn’t hold us accountable for results. That’s totally in His hands. But He does demand obedience.
