Yesterday Isn’t, Today Is, Tomorrow…Maybe

Twenty-four was filled with challenges in many ways for many people. We saw the consequences of hatred and anger in senseless violence as it spread its tentacles across our country and world into places that had been relatively peaceful and calm. Racism and anti-Semitism reared its ugliness across college campuses and other venues here and abroad. The USA was without leaders we could count on to make decisions in the country’s best interest.

I approach today’s post with mixed feelings of despair and hope. On the one hand, I see the world in a downward-spiraling pattern of evil behavior and self-promotion and remember that everything moves from order to chaos, never the other way around. It’s called a slippery slope for a reason. Human nature, being what it is, will never return to puritanical principles.

On the other hand,

for those of us who know Jesus Christ as Savior, Lord, and friend, there is a certain excitement and expectation for the future foretold in the Bible. And it’s that hope and excitement I want to address today.

Today’s title sums it up. Yesterday is gone and we can’t spend tomorrow. Therefore, we are left with today. Jesus warned the non-believers of His day with an analogy of weather phenomena, “You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why do you not analyze this present time?”(Luke 12:56). He could say the same thing to our society. The religious folk of His day totally missed who He was—God in human flesh—and thus rejected His message of salvation. It’s no different in our day.

The signs of the times

are clearly revealed in the Bible, “But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; avoid such men as these.” (2 Tim. 3:1-5).

We don’t have to look any further than our daily newspaper or news channel to recognize these descriptions of many in today’s world. In God’s mercy, He has allowed over two millennia of warnings for those on earth to recognize His love gift of His Son, Jesus, to bridge the chasm between us and Him. Sadly, most will not humble themselves, confess their sin, and be given eternal life. Because of this, most will face God’s wrath and judgment (Matt. 7:13,14).

I don’t know how much time

we have left before the cup of God’s wrath (see Jer. 25:15, Rev. 14:10, Rev. 16:19) is poured out on all who have rejected Jesus as the only way to eternity with God. But I do know it’s coming because God cannot lie (Tit. 1:2).

If you’re on the fence about this matter, or if you think that because you go to church and drop a few bucks in the plate as it goes by, you’ll take your chances, please take God’s warning seriously. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. Check out the appendix Steps to Salvation in the back of this book or online by clicking the link.

Thanks for reading. I hope to see you on the other side.
