No Time For Fools

Today is traditionally a day of pranks and other forms of gotchas aimed at tricking others into believing or acting on a falsehood. Most of it is intended in good clean fun under the heading “All Fools Day.” By contrast, the Bible doesn’t take lightly either the subject of foolishness or those labeled “fool.” There are nearly 200 appearances of the word fool or foolish, none of which is used in a positive light. Permit a few:

  • The Fool has said in his heart, “There is no God” Ps.14:1.
  • The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to counsel Prov.12:15.
  • He who spreads slander is a fool 10:18.
  • The wise in heart will receive commands, but a babbling fool will be ruined Prov. 10:8.
  • Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise Prov.17:28.

It’s not by accident

that four of the five I’ve chosen came from the book of Proverbs. Solomon, who wrote most of Proverbs, was the wisest man who ever lived (1 Kings 3:12).

We don’t have to look too far to find plenty of fools in today’s public eye. They’re everywhere drawing attention to themselves for a moment in the spotlight. If only they knew what God thought of them, they would be so embarrassed and ashamed. But, alas, since most of them don’t follow Jesus on the narrow path, they are not even aware of or searching for the right path. Pity. They will know the truth one day, hopefully before they breathe their last when it will be too late.

So is there something we can do about it?

Yes. Absolutely. We who are children of God and know and follow Jesus, have an obligation to the lost world to be light in their darkness. Time is running out for us to “store up for ourselves treasures in heaven” (Matt. 6:20) by winning souls for the kingdom. Someone, perhaps many, in your sphere of influence haven’t turned their lives over to the Savior of their soul, Jesus Christ. And their future in hell is assured until they do. Don’t be foolish, embarrassed or ashamed of the One who died for you. Pray that God would lead those across your path to permit you to share with them The Person who changed your life.
