My Portion
Scripture uses this phrase “my portion” five times. Have you ever asked yourself, “What is my portion?” (and are there seconds?) In my reading this morning in Christ In Men, in the section on patience, I came across Lamentations 3:25, “The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him.” The thought struck me that God wants to bless us. If that’s true, what is standing in His way?
I spent some time thinking
about the answer to the portion question. Since God can’t be divided into chunks, and four of the five uses of “my portion” refer to God or the Lord, and the fifth in Proverbs 30:8 identifies “food” (God’s word) as my portion, I concluded that my portion is the Lord God Himself and His word.
Leaving it at that doesn’t satisfy my desire for a more complete definition. So I believe that my portion is total, eternal, unqualified forgiveness. That is the portion for everyone who believes the gospel message that Jesus Christ died for their sin and rose from the dead to rejoin His Father in heaven.
But wait, there’s more.
Going back to the Lamentations verse above, the preceding verses explain God’s heart and the daily blessings that are in addition to my definition of portion: “The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning, great is Your faithfulness.” Are you getting the same picture I am? God, as Father, has planned our future, from salvation onward, to include daily blessings that are new every day. Wow!
So why do we still have trials, sorrows, regrets? The truth, though not easy to hear, is that God is molding us into the image and righteousness of His Son to prepare us for our new home in heaven. We fight Him because of our sins of pride, anger, lovelessness, and many others. We are comfortable with our sin. What’s needed to put it to death is just that—a death. Painful. Give in.
