Fact Or Feeling?
When you look in the mirror each morning, what do you see? Do you see the person the Bible says you are, or do you see the person you feel you are? What’s the difference? It’s in today’s title. By definition, another word for fact is truth—something that actually exists or occurs.
If you’ve received Christ as your Savior,
then what the Bible says about you is fact regardless of how you feel. Here is a sample of that truth from a list of over 20 in Ephesians 1 and 2. When you greet the morn, you can plug in “I am” or “I have” before each of these: Chosen, a child of the King, forgiven, sealed (in the Holy Spirit), blessed, predestined, access to God, the Holy Spirit, wisdom, hope, and many more.
Why does it matter?
There is a trend, growing with adherents, that focuses on identities. It appears that our psychological health is or can be directly tied to and influenced by who we think we are. The Internet and social media in particular are not our friends in this issue. When our self-esteem is based on how many “likes” we get, it’s no wonder teen suicide is on the rise. So the question becomes, “Who am I listening to?” Is it the God who wrote the Bible and cannot lie, or the fickle public caught up in the latest fads in music, clothing, and entertainment that do anything but point people to Christ?
There are many Scripture verses to support my viewpoint, but I’ve chosen one that not only affirms my identity in Christ, but also explains why the world opposes us: “See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did [does] not know Him” (1 John 3:1).
Are we walking the path that honors our Father?
Or are we straddling the fence between righteous living and wanting to be accepted by the world? Jesus has a warning for those who are lukewarm, “because you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth” (Rev. 3:16). Being rejected by Jesus is not something you want.
