God Doesn’t Remember

A few days ago, we celebrated Veterans Day: a day of remembrance. Psalm 106 talks about some who didn’t remember—the Israelites—and what God did because of it. (It’s a great read.)

I thought, with VD behind us and Thanksgiving looming, it might be good to address the act of remembering. The Bible is full of examples of how important it is for those who claim Jesus as Savior and friend to remember His goodness, faithfulness, mercy, forgiveness, love, and let it drive us to thankfulness for who He is as much as for what He does.

  • Remember this day…a powerful hand of the Lord brought you out” (Exo. 13:3), after God led the departure from Egypt.
  • Remember the sabbath to keep it holy” (Exo.20:8), one of “the 10.”
  • “You shall remember the Lord your God for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth” (Deut. 8:18), after God led the Israelites in the wilderness for 40 years.
  • Remember from where you have fallen and repent” (Rev. 2:5) God’s chastisement of the church at Ephesus

There are many more reminders

of God’s marvelous acts in nature, in the heavens, and in man himself, including God’s forgiveness of man’s continuous sins. I find it almost ironic that with all the commands for us to “remember” what the Lord has done, that He Himself doesn’t remember. And for us, that’s the best news we could hear. Listen to the promises: “…I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” (Jer. 31:34) “And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” (Heb. 10:17)

When we accept God’s free gift of salvation,

our slate is wiped clean. It’s as though we never sinned. The Bible tells us, “the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 6:23) As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we should daily remember the cost of our redemption that was gladly paid by Jesus on the cross so we could share eternity with Him.
