Guessing Or Knowing

Going through life guessing about the outcome of our choices, e.g. what job, what friendships, what life partner, can leave us with worry, fear, uncertainty. But God. Sometimes, when we’re facing obstacles that appear to us as stone walls, we just have to remember the phrase, But God. When the Bible says something, we should believe it and act on it. When it says it more than once, it’s something God is emphasizing so we don’t miss its significance.

In Genesis 18:14, God says to Abraham, “…is anything too difficult for me?” In Jeremiah 32:27, God asks Jeremiah, “…is anything too difficult for me?” You get the point. God wants us to know for certain that He’s “got our six.” And if these two verses aren’t specific enough, He adds a couple more. In Ephesians 1:18 we’re told, “…so that you will know what is the hope of His calling.” And in 1 John 5:13, “…so that you may know that you have eternal life.”

You ever notice the phrase “so that”

scattered throughout the Bible? It answers the ‘why’ questions we might have. God always has purpose in everything He does. Do we always know it? No. That’s OK. When timing and circumstances frustrate us and we think that God is slow or worse, doesn’t care, it’s a red flag that we’re not trusting Him for the outcome. We’re tempted to say something like, “C’mon, God, I need [more likely, I want] this now.”

How do we live in the knowing instead of guessing neighborhood? How do we know we’re on the right path instead of guessing which path to take? Fortunately, we have a reliable guide. And it’s readily available in America, at least for now. It’s true cover to cover. It introduces us to the God who created us, the God who loves us, the God who died for us, and the God who sustains us. And, BTW, it’s all the same God.

The next section of this post

will take you on a short journey through Psalm 119 with a key verse being 38: “Establish Your word to Your servant as that which produces reverence for You.” God deserves our reverence. He is holy. He is without sin. The Bible introduces us to Him and gives us many reasons to pursue adoption as His child. He’s faithful, doesn’t lie, loves unconditionally and many more. I hope this sampling will excite you to learn more from His word. The following verses are all from Psalm 119.

  • You want to be blessed by God? These verses tell us how and encourage us to be in the word. There’s also a warning for those who don’t stay on the path.

v.1 “How blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord.”

v.2 “How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, who seek Him with all their heart.”

v.21 “You rebuke the arrogant, the cursed, who wander from Your commandments.”

  • A purpose statement for memorizing Scripture.

v.11 “Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against you.”

  • The word is a guide that gives light and understanding to the simple, light for our path that we don’t stumble and a life of peace.

v.105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

v.130 “The unfolding of Your word gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.”

v.165 “Those who love Your law have great peace and nothing causes them to stumble.”

  • These three verses give a reward for meditating on the word and observing its law

v.98 “Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies.

v.99 “I have more insight than all my teachers for Your testimonies are my meditation.”

v.100 “I understand more than the aged because I have observed your precepts.”

I hope you now know some of the blessings

waiting for you and it has sparked an interest and confidence that God’s way is the only way that matters and you don’t have to guess if you’re good enough. Jesus’ death and resurrection wiped your slate clean. Jesus told the crowds, “I am the way, and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (Jn. 14:6).
