When the Past Becomes the Future

It’s still January, a time when many talk about goal setting via resolutions. And often when we think of the future, we define it in nebulous terms such as tomorrow, next month, next year, when the kids are grown and gone, etc. Spoiler alert: your future starts today. Everything from this moment on is your future.

It’s been said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Why does the past become the future? One reason is that we don’t do anything to change it. We’re either asleep at the switch, haven’t identified goals and laid out a plan to reach them, or we may assume that somebody else will make it happen for us. Another contributing factor could be that our past contains things that define us, control us, and rob us of hope.

At some point,

perhaps months or even years down the road, we look back and ask, “Where has the time gone?” Take heart. This is a book filled with good news and hope, and I’m an ambassador for the Author of good news. You may have a life filled with challenges, disappointment in those you trusted, personal failures, and more. But there is good news ahead. Failure is only the end if you don’t get up. King Solomon tells us, “A righteous man falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in time of calamity.” (Prov. 24:16).

If your past doesn’t include a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, you may not feel like a righteous man or woman because of your past or present condition. Jesus left heaven to show you the (not “a”) path out of that mire and lead the way. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but through Me” (John 14:6). He also said, “…the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out” (John 6”37).

The Apostle Paul,

writing to the Corinthian church, said this, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” (2 Cor. 5:17).

So the question is: “Are you in Christ?” This is a promise for anyone who will recognize that they have missed the mark on their own (the Bible calls it sin), turn to Jesus and believe that He paid the price for your sin with His death and resurrection so you could become a new creature with a new future, starting today.

Your past doesn’t have to become your future.

Jesus paid your admission price to a future in heaven with Him devoid of sin. You have a choice before you die. The Bible says, “It is appointed to man to die once and then comes judgment” (Heb. 9:27).

A future with Jesus is the best decision you could make. Don’t put it off another day.  Click here Steps To Salvation for a detailed description of God’s plan for your future.
