Our memories are funny things.
I can remember most of the words to oldies I hear on radio, but sometimes forget why I went into the garage. It’s also easy to get sidetracked if, on the way to do one thing, something else calls my attention. Peter spoke to the issue of memory this morning in my reading. He wrote, “For he who lacks these qualities [listed in v 5-7] is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins.” (2 Pet. 1:9)
For those of us who have known Jesus for a while, it’s easy to forget (or gloss over) the sins from which we’ve been delivered and take for granted our salvation in Christ. In Jesus’ message to the churches in Revelation 1-3, He tells the church in Ephesus, “Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent…” (Rev. 2:5) In the Lord’s Supper, we’re told, “…do this in remembrance of Me.” (Luke 22:19) What is it we’re supposed to remember about Jesus? Our sins and the cost to Him personally to redeem us. Try to picture the agony of being nailed to the cross. Then remember that YOU and I put Him there.
As we go through our day, many things pull at us from all directions. We’re busy. We’re tired. Ask yourself, “Today, am I thankful for what Jesus did FOR ME?” Hopefully, you can say yes. The best way to show Him our thanks is to live each day in humility and gratitude.
Today, make a commitment…
to start every day by thanking God for saving you. It’ll set the focus for whatever comes your way. In the introduction of the book Christ in Men…Today, part of it reads “Today. It’s the only day we have. Yesterday is a memory. We can’t spend tomorrow. This is about living in the moment, not presuming on the future. That’s not to say we shouldn’t have a plan if God grants us one more day. But too often we live in our plan and not the present.”
God has given each of us unlimited memory capacity. The psalmist says, “Your Word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You.” (Ps. 119:11) Let’s see how much of that capacity we can use for memorizing God’s Word.
If you don’t know Jesus personally, and you want to have a relationship with Him, stop by our “Steps to Salvation” page for a step by step outline. You’re not imposing on Him. He wants to have a relationship with YOU.
