How’s Your Weather

Technically, Fall isn’t here for another 20 days.

But it was only 44 degrees when I went out to get my paper yesterday. I’ve lived in the upper Midwest and visited my daughter in Houston, so I don’t complain about Colorado Springs weather—cold or hot. Speaking of cold or hot, one thing I love about God’s Word is that it doesn’t pull any punches. In Revelation 3:16, God says, “…because you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.” The word for “spit” is literally “vomit.” That’s about as direct an indictment as you’ll ever get for taking a middle-of-the-road stand for Jesus. And you know that He was talking to church people.

Anybody have a bucket list? What’s the ratio of “me” things vs. “you” things? The poet C.T. Studd said it best: “Only one life, ’twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.” Life is short, time marches on, and being ready for tomorrow is crucial. In Colorado, we never went (motorcycle) riding for any distance or more than a few hours without taking rain gear. Why? Because we’ve been caught without it and it’s not fun.

We’ve had plenty of warning…

that tribulation—terrible things—are coming to earth. Don’t know when. But it could be literally any day. The Bible predicts it in detail…just not the exact “hour and day and month and year” (Rev. 9:15). The main problem with waiting is that it will happen in an instant—the twinkling of an eye (1 Cor. 15:52)—and then it’s too late. That’s why preparation is critical. Getting ready is not a long, drawn-out process. It happens at the speed of a decision, a decision to trust Jesus Christ to forgive your sins and adopt you into His forever family.

Jesus told the thief on the cross, “…today you shall be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). The thief was dying. He had no time to do good deeds or be baptized or anything else, yet Jesus promised “today.” Kinda shoots holes in “religious” claims that something has to be added to Jesus to be saved. But that is the devil’s strategy, to add requirements of “doing something” to the finished work of Christ on the cross. Anyone preaching that message is lying to you. God’s gift is free. Like presents on your birthday. You didn’t do anything to earn them, and sometimes you probably don’t even deserve them. But because your family loves you, you still receive them. God loves you and wants you in His family. Don’t put it off.
