Humility…Emulates Jesus, Pleases God

Your boasting is not good” (1 Cor. 5:6). “Let another praise you and not your own lips” (Prov. 27:2). “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8). I could stop here and this message would be complete. But let’s flesh it out a bit.

In January 2023, our post was Humility or Hypocrisy

and most of it was focused on hypocrisy. Today, we’ll look a little deeper at humility. There are so many verses that it’s hard to pick a few that tell it like it is from God’s perspective. Here are two more that should erase any doubt about what God thinks. “There are six things the Lord hates, haughty eyes (top of the list)” (Prov. 6:16). Isn’t it interesting that He says “eyes”? It’s been said that “Eyes are the windows to the soul.” And can’t we often tell about a person by looking into their eyes?

But not to digress too far, the verse couldn’t state God’s position any clearer. He hates pride. And lest we think it can’t happen to us, remember that Satan started out as one of God’s top angels, privileged to continuous and unrestricted access to God’s presence (Ezek. 28:14). But pride got to him and he thought he could make himself “like the Most High” (Isa. 14:14). His pride cost him his place in heaven (1 Tim. 3:6) and assured a future permanent address in “Sheol”.

To wrap this up, as believers,

our goal, our charter is that we are to become more like Jesus each day. What does that look like? Jesus gives us the answer: “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls” (Matt. 11:29). There it is. Take. Learn. Jesus is the model. If we don’t, Scripture has the answer to that too, “…God is opposed to the proud but gives grace to the humble” (1 Pet. 5:5).

Come back next time for more about God’s generosity in giving grace. Thanks for reading.
