Is it still ‘Today’?

You can’t sleep.

You’re anxious for tomorrow. Are you a little child waiting for Christmas morning? Or are you an adult living in 2020? They’re both anticipating the unknown. So what makes the difference? One has hope, the other fear and pessimism. But it doesn’t have to be that way. If you’re in the latter category, you can have hope too. And the object of that hope is real and not just wishful thinking.

In Hebrews, we’re told to “encourage one another day after day as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” (Heb. 3:13). You say, “What’s encouraging about today?” I understand that perspective, what with the media constantly reminding us to social distance and wear masks because we’re spreading death everywhere we go.

Need A New Plan.com is in the business of GOOD NEWS. Today is no exception. We—those of us who know the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior—have a lot to be encouraged about.

At the top of the list…

is the fact that the God of the universe knows our name: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!” (Isa. 43:1b, emphasis added). Next, we are His because we believe in God’s son Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins. The list goes on and on. Permit a couple more. Our future is secure with Christ. The worst man can throw at us cannot cause God to lose His grip on us, “…no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand” (John 10:29). And, one of the best, “As far as the East is from the West, so far has He removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12).

If that doesn’t encourage us, either our faith is small or our (little ‘g’) god is small. Re-read my list, then develop one of your own. By the time you’ve got half a dozen items you’re thankful for, you’ll be like a little kid waiting for Christmas…only better because Heaven isn’t just for a day.
